About Motor Reliability Upgrades

At eBike Motor Centre we noticed the failure rates of the Brose and Bosch motors that had been widely reported and discussed on forums and social media platforms, worldwide. We could also see from our own experience, and the sheer number of Brose and Bosch motors going through our workshops, and that there were a few issues that needed addressing. Also, we've done the same with other motors like the Bafang and Mahle (SL) motors - we can make them better and much more reliable.

Water Ingress

All eBike motors suffer from water, dust and dirt ingress... whilst this is being improved with each new motor model released, ingress is still the no.1 issue we see everyday - it caused degradation to bearings, gears, belts and electronics. Motors are compromised with water dust and dirt ingress, and we have developed fixes to significantly improve the sealing of some motor models and brands.

Example: the standard Brose ebike motor has a single layer of sealing before water enters the motor... we add 5 additional layers of sealing which makes this motor near, close to "water ingress proof".

Bearing Failures

This relates to upgrading motors with heavier-duty sprag bearings that can collapse with a pedal strike or heavy motor loading, or replacing bearings without sealing with double sealed bearings to better protect, and replacing some specific bearings with a better design or better stronger bearing versions... again, all these bearing upgrades provide a significant improvement to your motor reliability.

Component Failure

In simple terms... some motors have components that fail. For example, the Mahle 1.1 and 1.2 motors have a retaining cap that secures the sprag bearing from axial movement, and that cap can work its way loose and cause a sprag bearing collapse. Or the Bafang BBSHD motor has a nylon drive gear that is commonly stripped... it can be upgraded with a steel or peek replacement gear.

Motor Noise

Some motors have inherent design flaws that can cause an abnormally noisy motor... and we have successfully resolved a number of specific motor noise issues. We have been engaged internationally as a result of this work, to resolve real world and current eBike motor noise problems, with improvements that have been implemented into the latest generation eBike motors.
